If you’re looking for a way to spark deeper conversations and keep you connected during a long TDY or deployment, I have got the perfect solution for you!

The Struggles

During long separations and operating on two completely different schedules, it can be challenging to maintain a level of intimacy and connection with your significant other. When my husband is away, we chat daily giving mini updates of our accomplishments and remaining plans for the day. Most conversations remain surface-level with one of us being preoccupied with something else physically in front of us. Typically our calls never last more than 15 minutes before one of us needs to get off to tend to something else. Repeat this everyday and you have a recipe for monotonous conversations. *Cue the yawn.*

Anyone who has navigated a long-distance relationship knows it takes extra effort from both parties to keep the connection strong. Military life can be tough, but it also reminds us to cherish the moments we have together. Through our 8 years of marriage, we strive to be intentional with our time together and are always looking for ways to connect on a deeper level. Even with our strong foundation, we struggle with our connection during times apart.

The Solution

It was my husband that found THIS simple solution to cure our woes.

Allow me to introduce: Talking Point.

A fun card game designed to connect couples on a deeper level through real conversation. The deck of 200 cards includes four categories: ‘Get to Know You’, ‘Our Life Together’, ‘Diving Deeper’, and ‘Something Different’.

With our son sound asleep in his bed and beverages of choice in hand, we sat down at our dining tables 1,700 miles apart and began playing. We were both giddy with anticipation as I pulled the first card from the ‘Get to Know You’ category and read it aloud. We took turns answering each question from all four categories alternating who answered first. We had so much fun with each category, we decided to run through them all once more. Before I knew it, we had been on the phone for over 2 hours! I was mind boggled because I thought we had been talking for around 45 minutes.

The Results

When I say it transformed our time apart, I am not exaggerating. Even though we’ve been married 8 years, this game successfully gave us both that ‘first date feel’, butterflies and all! It was such an effective game that it is something we will be implementing into our virtual (and in person) date nights for all future TDYs and deployments!
