As WAFs (and military spouses in general), it’s no secret that we face many unique challenges. From closing a significant chapter of our lives every few years to traveling and moving around the globe to be with our spouse, one obvious thing that takes a hit is our careers. Whether you were totally in love with the career field you originally chose, or like me, you knew it wasn’t the best fit, you’ve likely had questions about the spaces, places and gaps on your resume. Let’s face it: it’s not always easy to find a job you love (or a job at all) where you are stationed.

When we first moved to Las Vegas from South Carolina, I took the first job at the university I could land. I knew it was a terrible fit, but I wanted to do something. 8 months in, after months of tears every single day (and I am not much of a feelings person) I quit without a backup plan. Enter MadSkills. I was determined not to settle this time and I knew I wanted to step away from the higher education career I had earned my Master’s degree to pursue. My next step became clear: head back to my marketing and communication roots. After a few months of dead ends and interviews for positions that just weren’t right, I learned about a work from home marketing position at a military spouse owned small business through a spouse group I am a part of. A ha! My light at the end of the tunnel!

When it came time to apply, my now-supervisor handled the entire process through MadSkills. MadSkills is changing the narrative on military spouse employment. It’s a place for military spouses to find virtual careers that align with their goals. It is owned and operated by military spouses and many of the MadSkills customers are military/veteran/mil spouse owned and operated organizations.

In my opinion, every military spouse looking for work should have their resume in the MadSkills system. They build teams on demand, so they can pull that resume and match you with a virtual career without ever posting the position. They do post many positions, but this is just an added bonus. Finding that perfect match without having to do the dirty work? Yes please!

I’ve now been with my original small business for 4 months, just started a new project with another business which I was referred to through the ‘on demand’ process and I am loving having the flexibility to teach fitness classes each day and work from anywhere my pilot’s TDYs may take me.
