When I was selected to run the Boston Marathon as part of the fundraising efforts for the USO, it was a dream come true. Literally a collision of my worlds as my love for running and dream of Boston met up with my desire to spread awareness of resources and organizations that support military families. It’s been such a privilege to learn more about the USO and all the support they provide!

Established in 1941, the USO has been a constant source of comfort and assistance, fostering a sense of connection and providing crucial services to military families across the globe. Here are a few highlighted ways the USO works to support the military community and some personal testimonies from the WAF community!

1. Emotional Support and Connection:

One of the primary functions of the USO is to bridge the gap between military members and their families during deployments and long periods of separation. Through a network of USO centers worldwide, families can connect with their deployed loved ones through video calls, internet access, and communication facilities. These centers serve as a home away from home, offering a supportive environment where families can share their experiences and emotions.

Testimony:

I have a testimony for you! My husband is currently deployed and found out the USO on his base offers the USO Reading Program. He is able to pick a kids book, record himself reading it, and then the recording is emailed to me and Amazon sends the physical book to us! It has been a wonderful morale booster for my kids while he’s gone!

2. Entertainment and Recreation

The USO is renowned for its efforts to boost the morale of military personnel through various entertainment programs. From live performances by celebrities to movie nights and gaming facilities, the USO ensures that military families have access to recreational activities that provide a much-needed break from the demands of military life. These events not only entertain but also create lasting memories for families facing unique challenges.

3. Airport Lounges and Support Services

Traveling can be a stressful experience, especially for military families who often relocate due to deployments or transfers. The USO operates airport lounges at major transportation hubs, providing a comfortable and welcoming space for military members and their families. These lounges offer amenities like snacks, internet access, and a place to rest, making the journey a bit smoother for those in service.

testimony:

Whenever I’ve traveled alone with the kids out of Denver I’ve always gone and sat in the USO gotten snacks and let the kiddos play before our flight & when we PCSed and flew from HI to Los Angeles we were able to go stay the night in the USO kids and all to then be ready to go grab our car the next morning, I’m so thankful for all they do for Service members and their Families!

4. Deployment Support

The USO recognizes the challenges that come with deployments and strives to ease the burden on military families left behind. Through various programs, such as deployment workshops and support groups, the organization offers resources and guidance to help families navigate the emotional and practical aspects of separation. This support is crucial in maintaining the well-being of military families throughout the deployment period.

5. Care Packages and Outreach Programs

To express gratitude and provide practical support, the USO distributes care packages to deployed troops, containing essential items and reminders of home. Additionally, the organization engages in outreach programs that focus on the specific needs of military families, such as educational support, financial counseling, and wellness initiatives. These efforts contribute to the overall resilience of military families facing the unique challenges of military life.

testimony:

“Last year we were going through a bankruptcy and someone from our church let the USO know. For Christmas last year they told us to meet them and that they had a little Christmas thing for people experiencing hardships. I couldn’t go but my husband took my kids. When he got there they surprised us with a brand new 65” inch tv , $500 visa gift card, a year membership to the YMCA. two $100 restaurant gift cards, a voucher for a free car detail and a Winn Dixie gift card for groceries. We had no idea how to make the holidays special and they came in full fold for our family.”

In conclusion, the USO plays an indispensable role in supporting military families, fostering a sense of community, and providing vital services that contribute to the well-being of our nation’s heroes. And you can be a part of making sure these services continue for the wellbeing of the military community as a whole!
